The Somali Regional Government has reaffirmed its strong commitment to promoting large-scale agricultural investment as a strategic pathway to achieving food self-sufficiency, generating employment, and expanding export potential from surplus production. This commitment was demonstrated through the formal handover of 500 hectares of agricultural land to KAROOR Agro-Industry Share Company under the West Goday Production Project.
A ceremonial event marking the land handover was held in West Goday and attended by senior federal and regional officials. Among the dignitaries present were the Vice President of the Somali Regional State, Mr. Ibrahim Osman Farah; the Federal Minister of Irrigation and Low-Lying Lands, Dr. Abraham Belay; the Minister of Mineral Resources, Eng. Habtamu Tegenje; the Head of the Somali Region Water Resources Bureau, Eng. Ahmed Mirad Layli; and the Head of the Somali Region Irrigation and Basin Development Bureau, Mr. Mohamed Fatah, alongside other federal, regional, and local government representatives.
Speaking at the ceremony, Vice President Mr. Ibrahim Osman Farah underscored the Regional Government’s long-term vision to transform the Somali Region into a major agricultural production hub. He noted that, in addition to the land allocated in West Goday, the government plans to provide further productive land to KAROOR Agro-Industry Share Company in Sitti and Qorraxay zones, reflecting growing confidence in private-sector-led agricultural development.
The Vice President emphasized the importance of effective and responsible land utilization, urging the company to maximize productivity while adhering to sustainable agricultural practices. He also called on the company to prioritize the creation of employment opportunities for local communities and to facilitate the transfer of modern agricultural technologies and skills, thereby strengthening local capacity and livelihoods.
The West Goday Irrigation Project is part of a broader regional strategy to harness the Somali Region’s vast arable land and water resources through irrigation-based agriculture. By attracting credible private investors and fostering public-private partnerships, the Somali Regional Government aims to reduce dependence on food imports, stabilize food supplies, and position the region as a contributor to national and regional agricultural exports.
This land handover marks another significant milestone in the Somali Regional Government’s ongoing efforts to create an enabling environment for agricultural investment, stimulate inclusive economic growth, and ensure sustainable food security for present and future generations.
